Biographical history
Dundee Art Society was founded in 1890 as the Graphic Arts Association, the name being changed to Dundee Art Society in 1904, making it one of the oldest art societies in the North East of Scotland. The Society had premises in the Nethergate and later Tay Street, until 1949 when premises were acquired at 17 Roseangle, now known as the Roseangle Gallery. Initially members of the society included professional artists, as well as patrons and admirers of the arts. Membership was later extended to semi-professional and non-professional artists in the area. This reflects the society's objective which has been to encourage the study and advancement of the visual arts by promoting interaction between the artist and those with an interest in the arts. Dundee Art Society is a charitable, non-profit-making organisation. They hold and promote public exhibitions and lectures with the purpose of encouraging the advancement of the Arts.
