Biographical history
Roger Allen obtained PhD in Physical Chemistry from Leeds University and in 1957 he started work at Queen's College, Dundee, as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow. In 1964 he was appointed a lecturer and held the post until his retirement in 1986. He died in an accident in Norway in July 1992, aged 54. Roger Allen's main academic fields of interest were chemistry and biochemistry, he was also a keen climber and mountaineer. He led a few research expeditions to Greenland including one in 1968, and was a member of those organized by other researchers. The aim of the expeditions was to examine chemical characteristics of glaciers, waters, lakes and the surface of Greenland and Allen's research resulted in the publication of articles and reports on this subject as well as talks given to members of various societies.
