The Dundee, Perth & London Shipping Co. Ltd., incorporated on the 3 July 1826, was a fusion of the Dundee and Perth Shipping Company, established in 1798 and the Dundee and Perth Union Shipping Company established in 1819. The Dundee and Perth Co., ran vessels from Dundee to London, Glasgow and Liverpool in addition to lighters between Dundee and Perth. The Union Shipping Co., ran from Dundee to London, Glasgow and Leith and lighters from Dundee to Perth. The Dundee and Newcastle Company was taken over in 1917 and the Kirkcaldy Steamship Co., was acquired in 1918. The next development was the purchase of the Leith-Dundee-Southampton-Treport service of Mr Thomas Cowan of Leith and in 1929 the Aberdeen, Newcastle and Hull Steam Company was acquired. Until the outbreak of war in 1939 the company's London Traders, usually the Dundee, the Perth and the London carried passengers as well as cargo. London cargo services switched to rail in 1961. In 1971 the D.P.&L. Shipping Co. became involved in North Sea Oil when the first British Petroleum oil rig supply ship berthed at Queen Elizabeth wharf and in 1973 an agreement was reached with Thiess-Petrosea International to operate an oil rig supply base from the western section of the Eastern Wharf.

Booklet entitled ' The History of a Hundred Years' , 1826-1926. Booklet refers to an illustrated history of Dundee, Perth and London Shipping Co. Ltd. Booklet includes photographs of ships (and of paintings and drawings of ships), of Boards of Directors (1881 and 1926), list of Directors since 1861, capital of company, 1826-1914, list of ships owned by company (built 1805-1909).
