Biographical history

Robert L Fleming Ltd was founded in 1932 by Robert Lang Fleming, who set up a factory to laminate jute with paper. Seabraes Mill was bought in 1939. Following the death of his father in 1944, Robert L Fleming Junior took over the running of the company and in 1950 purchased the business from the trustees of his father's estate. The company diversified into multiwall paper sack manufacture, particularly for animal feeds and cement. Throughout the 1960s Fleming was the leading sack manufacturer in the United Kingdom. In 1964 the company merged with the Swedish firm Billerud Aktiebolag of S228ffle, which itself became part of Stora in 1984. In 1977 Robert L Fleming Junior stepped down as Managing Director of the Dundee operation and was replaced by John Picton. Picton in turn retired in 1991, the position of Managing Director being filled by Harry Wills in 1992. In 1995 Fleming was taken over by the Swedish firm AssiDom228n.
