Biographical history
This company's origins can be traced back to around 1788 when William Don established a linen merchants and manufacturers business in Forfar. In 1865 the company of Don Brothers, Buist was formed when the Don business amalgamated with that of A.J. Buist. As Don Brothers, Buist & Co Ltd, the business amalgamated with Low Brothers & Co (Dundee) Ltd, a merchant house, in 1960, although both companies continued to trade under their former names. The company also expanded by taking over a number of other textile businesses, including J & J Smart (Brechin) Ltd and Moffat & Son Ltd, as it became one of Scotland's most important textile firms. Don & Low (Holdings) Ltd was formed in March 1987 when Don Brothers, Buist plc reverted to being a private company. This followed the company's being taken over by Shell UK Ltd.
