History

Private James (Jim) Braid of the Royal Highlanders had enlisted before the outbreak of war. His early letters home to his family in Kirkcaldy show that he was thinking about buying himself out, but after a few months, he settled into Army life. The correspondence of letters and Field Service postcards covers his time spent training in Aldershot and in Ross-shire and describe life in France and at the Front. Jim was killed in action 25 September, 1915 on the first day of the Battle of Loos.
