Records concerning the life and adventures of Mary Eleanor Bowes (1749-1800) with correspondence from Robert Maxtone Graham concerning the Maxtone Graham family, 1776-1993. These records were transferred from Dundee University Library in 1993. They were found enclosed in a copy of 'The Confessions of the Countess of Strathmore, Written by Herself' (London, 1793). Mary Eleanor Bowes (1749-1800), Countess of Strathmore, was born in 1749, the only child of George Bowes (1701-1767) and Mary Gilbert. In 1767 she inherited her father's estate and on 24 February married John Lyon (later Bowes-Lyon), Earl of Strathmore. He died in 1776 and in the same year she married Andrew Stoney whom she later divorced in 1789 following his mistreatment of her. She died on 28 April 1800 and was buried in Westminster Abbey. Her love affairs were published in 'The confessions of the Countess of Strathmore, written by herself' (London, 1793).
