Collection consists of books, booklets, media (CD and boxed presentation slides), photographs, copies of pages from books and typed notes in respect of the history of anaesthesia in Dundee and the history of Dundee Royal Infirmary, along with 2 wallet folders titled 'Dr SW McGowan, Anaesthesia' and 'Dr AH Mackin, History of Medicine' containing similar contents.

Also mentions his 21st birthday celebrations, becoming an MD and moving from Edinburgh to London then to Leeds, his ‘money difficulties’, and ‘getting into practice’. Includes letter from his father agreeing that he ‘did right to break off your engagement with Miss H as it will probably be some years before you are in a situation to marry’, 1843-1847.
