Piece of Pipe

Heavy piece of pipe possibly copper, possibly part of a gun. Written label on one side, 'Piece of machinery taken out of the fier of the patent office that was [?] in Washington DC. [?] 1882 while [?]'. 10cm in length, good condition, though mild oxidation is present.

Contains drawings by William E. Ruggles of episodes in the American Civil War. 1863-1864. 2 sets of photographs of these drawings are also held. [See MS 29/4.] Also contains correspondence and documents mainly relating to Ruggles' drawing and the American Civil War; biographical notes on William Eugene Ruggles and Phillip M. Ostrander, by David Swinfen, later incorporated into a book by Dr Swinfen: 'Ruggles' Regiment: the 122nd New York Volunteers in the American Civil War', 1982; and a set of negatives and two sets of photographic prints of the drawings (except MS 29/1/7, of which there is only one print) which includes photographs of signature of W.F. Ruggles and [erased] signature of Ostrander, including photograph of enhancement of Ostrander's signature by Forensic Dept. of Tayside Police.

Sash

2 narrow pieces of black fabric, one cotton, one satin(?), sash. Different lengths, good condition.

Sewing Kit

A small wallet containing sewing supplies, including pins, needles and thread. Poor condition, due to use, damage to cover of wallet, though the actual contents are in a good condition.

Letter dated 2 September, 1959, by Edgar M. Howell, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C. to Mr. Boyd. Asks for details of drawings and possibility of photographs of them.

Smoking Pipe

large wooden smoking pipe in two pieces that slot together. Roughly 23cm in height when assembled, slightly damaged, though this seems superficial.

Spectacles and Case

Spectacles in a case, but not a spectacles case. Faint writing on the lid of the case. Spectacles damaged along the bridge, but seem to have been repaired by the owner using a piece of fabric. Probably used for reading. Spectacles are 11cm across, the case is 13.5cm in length. Spectacles are in good condition 9besides the bridge), and the case has superficial damage tocover of the case, but is in a good condition besides that.

Stone

Piece of stone, granite? 11cm in length.
