Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland funded 2000 Feasibility Study.

The Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland funded a Feasibility Study to examine the proposed establishment of the Institute for the Languages of Scotland. The feasibility study was carried out by questionnaire seeking the views of those involved in language related societies, higher education, language related activities, government and the general public to give an overview of the language resources in Scotland. It also investigated comparable institutions in other countries to recommend a way forward.

The Royal Society of Edinburgh had an interest of the development of resources for the languages of Scotland and the proposed establishment on an Institute for the Languages of Scotland. A group representing a large proportion of those engaged in the formal study of the languages of Scotland met under the auspices of the Royal Society of Edinburgh to discuss the from and reemit of an Institute for the Languages of Scotland.
