Neil Stewart watercolour. Comments by W.T. Gairdner read "Haemorrhagic lesions ('apoplexy') of lungs, due to mitral contraction. The condensed portions are evidently undergoing secondary changes of the nature of a gray degeneration of the blood clot. This is especially seen in Fig. 3. In Fig. 2 one part nearer the surface has become gangrenous. In Fig. 1 there are both recent and older condensations, and in one place a cavity with smooth walls. Case of Eliza Munro."

Blood vessels of recent origin are seen crossing it from above downwards, and one larger and more tortuous transversely.'" "Lower- 'Blood corpuscles (red) of varying sizes, as taken from the interior of the largest tortous traverse red-blood space shown above; associated with masses of altered haematin and hyaline vesicles but no free white corpuscles.'"

Unsigned watercolour but it is likely the work of Neil Stewart. Commentry by W.T. Gairdner reads "Colon of Pat McGuire aet 6. Unvaccinated. Admitted to E.R.I. with smallpox and died on the fourth day of the eruption. There were violent haemorrhages from the bowels --missing--. Blood was found extravasated also after death in kidneys and lung. The appearances here --missing-- and exact rep [?] were regarded as a smallpox eruption occuring on the mucous membrane --missing--. See Ed. Med. Journal, Feb 1849 p549 {?}. Jan 1849"
