History

The company H. & A. Scott, Jute and Polypropylene manufacturers and merchants was founded by Hugh & Alexander Scott in 1857 as H. & A. Scott, Manufacturers at Tayfield Works, Seafield Road. In 1905 the company became H. & A. Scott, Limited, spinners, manufacturers and merchants of jute, flax, hemp, cotton and wool. Following the death of his father in 1914 Alistair Scott became a Chairman of the company. He remained a Chairman of the Directors until his death in 1941. Hubert Scott was Chairman and Managing Director from 1946 to 1984. He reopened Tayfield Works after the war. During his lifetime he was a Chairman of the Association of Jute Spinners and Manufacturers, of the Jute Trade Council, of the British Jute Trade Research Association and of the British Polyelefin Textiles Association. He was also a past director of and deputy president of Dundee Chamber of Commerce. At various times he was vice-chairman of Tayside Health Board and a director of the Bannatyne Home of Rest. In March 1985 H. & A. Scott Holdings Ltd was acquired by Amoco UK Ltd. The total operations including all the assets and liabilities were transferred to a new company Amoco Fabrics (UK) Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Amoco UK Ltd.
